Tradition is a way of remembering and celebrating collective history. Documentation of history is mostly an academic exercise for the sake of studying it, while celebrating history as an event, festival or anniversary is a communal approach of remembering it. Dasara doll festival is one such occasion to appreciate our history.
Love for dolls is universal in nature. Children as well as adults across classes, cultures, communities, races and creed are attracted to dolls. Every country, region and tradition has unique dolls that are treasured and loved. Dolls reflect the aesthetics, beliefs, thoughts and aspirations of the culture in which they are created in. Dolls are created using readily available raw materials. The physical attributes and costumes are the very first features which convey the idea of their place of origin.
This 15th edition of Bombe Mane celebrates the 60th anniversary of Barbie doll with a diorama of Barbie dolls in various avatars along with ethnic dolls from countries like Uzbekistan, Thailand, Vietnam, France, Germany, Britain, etc. This year marks the 150th, 135th, 130th and 100th birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi, H.H. Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV (Nalwadi; 24th Maharaja of Mysore), Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and H.H. Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar Bahadur (25th Maharaja of Mysore) respectively, and these anniversaries are being commemorated with a special display of dolls, rare photographs, paintings and some vintage oleographs.
Another unique display is 'Varnaankita' the fascinating tradition of naamas and tilakas, the forehead markings of Hindus. Tilakas or teekas vary from a simple small dot (bindi) to elaborate painting of forehead which sometimes include nose, cheeks, temples and other parts of the body; some of them have to be applied while chanting specific mantras. Ubiquitous kumkum, turmeric, kajal and ash (bhasma or vibhuti) aside, exotic materials like ashtagandha, kesara, gandhaakshata, kasturi, chandana, sindhoora, angaraka, gorochana, bhandaara, bukka, saad, gulal, etc., are used in applying vivid patterns which express the identity of the wearer befitting clans, communities, sects and classes. This sectarian symbolism made it easy for everyone to be identified. Nowadays, there is a tendency to blend in. But in olden days, it was favored to stand out and proclaim one's identity proudly. Pictures, masks, dolls and allied paraphernalia are set to take you on a colourful journey of this interesting tradition.
Leela Shuka - Vivid hued parrots have flocked together at the fourth special display to welcome the Goddess and God of love - Rati and Manmatha. Parrot holds a special place in Hindu mythology wherein Goddesses Parvati, Meenakshi, Andal, Kamakshi, Matangi, Lalita and Rajarajeshwari are seen holding a parrot each.
Thousands of dolls in various sizes and shapes are at Bombe Mane and many of these have been created anew like - Appaji Ammanni doll pair (which honour the royal couple of Mysuru), cute bride and groom pairs, Nava Nataraja, Sapta Nadi, Gajendra Moksha, Atti Varadar, Rama Guha Alingana, Pancha Utsava Murthy, Dashavatara Vitthala, etc. These dolls have brought alive the halls of Pratima Gallery.
